CNN provided an article about healthy lifestyle while traveling for work.
It can be difficult to pursue a healthy lifestyle when you are taking a long haul flight, you are jet lagged and you are sleep deprived. When you have reached your destination there is the temptation of indulgent dinners next.
Ditch the rental car or the taxi
It is tempting to use a rental car or a taxi from your hotel to the conference. Depending on the distance you could decide to walk, if it is less than 5 or 6 kilometers (3 to 3.75 miles). If it is more, take public transportation (bus, tram, subway). At least you are moving actively to and from the public transportation and you relax during the transportation. Many cities have pedestrian friendly downtown cores that invite you to explore. You often get the best sights of the city you are in. Many cities now have bicycle sharing systems and safe bicycle pathways. In some cities the first 30 minutes are free.
Cancel the happy hour
Did you think of joining the happy hour at the hotel? Think again. The extra alcohol does your system no good and only makes the hotel management rich. Visit a museum instead. You find stimulating exhibits of ancient artifacts. Your mind gets stimulated and your horizon widens. At the same time you disengage from the multitude of lectures you listening to at the conference.
Alternates to the hotel gym
While a workout in the gym can be a good way to get the day started, on a nice day it may be more fun to enjoy the outside area. You could jog at a park. There is Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, CA. San Diego, CA has the Balboa Park. In Seattle, WA you find the Discovery Park. In New York City you can go for brisk walks in the Hudson River Park.
Conclusion
We are so used to sit in a plane for longer trips, take a taxi or rental car when we reached the destination and stay at a hotel until it is time to attend the meetings or a conference. We take it as a given that we are getting there by a rental car or a taxi. The best way, if the distances are not too far, is to walk. The next best is to use the public transportation system of the locality where the conference is. The key is to minimize the detrimental factors like drinking and sitting around. We can replace them with other healthier activities. Walks, jogging and exploring are offering more stress relief than a double martini at the bar.
