We are getting more cancer with alcohol says the World Cancer Congress. Alcohol was causing more than 700,000 cancer cases and more than 366,0000 cancer deaths in 2012. Researchers compared cancer risks of drinkers to the risks of non-drinkers. 5% of new cancer rates and 4.5% of terminal cancer cases are due to drinking alcohol.
Next research compared different cancer rates in different tissues. 25% of breast cancer cases and 23% of colorectal cancer cases showed a direct link to alcohol consumption.
Breast cancer from alcohol
Kevin Shield is the co-author of a study of the International Agency for Research on Cancer. He pointed out that with breast cancer there is a linear relationship between alcohol consumption and risk for developing cancer. He stated “a lot of persons are unaware that alcohol can be a cause for cancer”.
The deaths that have the closest link to alcohol consumption are those due to esophageal cancer and colorectal cancer.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer considers alcohol to be a “group 1 carcinogen”.
Other studies have indicated that breast cancer can have its cause in the consumption of alcohol. Even one drink per day makes a noticeable difference! This is in conflict with what cardiologists recommend for women to prevent heart attacks. They have been preaching for some time the following. Women should consume one drink of red wine per day and and men two glasses of wine per day. This would significantly prevent heart attacks.
Other studies pointed out that alcohol could be detrimental to your brain. It seems that even smaller amounts of alcohol damage your hippocampus where memory and sex drive are located. These findings do not really come as a surprise, as alcohol is a nerve poison.
Conclusion
Breast cancer and colorectal cancer show a direct relationship to the toxic effects of alcohol. Esophagus cancer death rates also show a close association with alcohol consumption. There is some confusion, because of the previous recommendation of cardiologists to drink one glass of wine daily for women or two glasses per day of wine for men to prevent heart attacks. Perhaps it is safer to use the red grape supplement, resveratrol 500 mg, once daily for the prevention of heart attacks, as this would eliminate alcohol exposure. Whatever we do, we should think about alcohol consumption in view of the fact that medical research recognizes alcohol as a group 1 carcinogen. Do we really want to regularly consume a certain dosage of a cancer producing substance? It may have sounded logical in the past, but knowing the consequences, it does no longer make sense!
